Pet owners can say thank you to their animal companions with a special blessing in Preston.
Staff from Sacred Heart Primary School in Preston are holding a pet blessing on October 11 to celebrate the animals close to people’s hearts.
The public is welcome to attend and receive a blessing from a Sacred Heart Catholic Church minister and stay for refreshments afterwards.
Principal Mark Tierney said the tradition was carried over from previous schools and had always been well-received.
“Pets are very important to children in particular and a lot of elderly people,” he said.
“Pets play a very important part of our lives including companionship and this is a chance to get together and say thank you.”
Mr Tierney’s seven-month-old border collie Harvey will be in attendance, and he expects to see rabbits, cats and maybe an exotic pet or two as well.

“At previous schools we had about 250 people come. The pets were really well-behaved,” he said.
“We didn’t have to separate cats or dogs — it was quite a peaceful experience.”
You can join the blessing from 7pm on October 11 at Sacred Heart Primary School, Preston.
