A young man who drove at up to 150km/h through residential streets in Preston has admitted to stealing 12 vehicles, despite never having had a licence.
Timothy Georgiadis also ran red lights after being released on bail on a deferred sentence for the second time.
The 20-year-old fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 21, to be sentenced for a long list of crimes dating back to May 2019, including dangerous driving and almost 20 petrol drive-offs.
He was most recently arrested on June 15 when he fled from police in a stolen car in Preston.
The court heard the police Air Wing spotted him driving a stolen Toyota Kluger through Preston about 12am, before police approached him on St Georges Rd, where he ignored them and upped his speed to 150km/h in an 80km/h zone.
Leading Senior Constable Ken Marsh said Georgiadis then reached speeds of 150km/h in residential streets and ran multiple red lights, despite no police near him.
Police managed to deflate the car’s tyres in Brunswick, where he kept driving before finally coming to a stop.
Tools, a balaclava, a range of IDs in different names and false number plates, all believed to be proceeds of crime, were found in the back seat.
Senior Constable Marsh said Georgiadis told police he had seen his photo on Facebook regarding a warrant out for his arrest so had bought the stolen car to stay on the run.
He’d also stolen $55.45 petrol from Coles Express Bundoora on June 13.
Georgiadis had only been released from custody on a deferred sentence on May 27 after he pleaded guilty to helping his mate steal a car and driving a stolen car.
And those crimes came just weeks after he’d been granted bail on May 1 after pleading guilty to stealing nine cars, number plates and 18 petrol drive-offs.
Magistrate Helen Murphy said there was no choice but to sentence the Roxburgh Park man for the large number of serious matters, after he had been given repeated chances on supervised bail.
Ms Murphy sentenced him to 12 months’ detention to be served at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre, with 136 days of the sentence having already been served across multiple stints on remand in adult prison.
She said he would have received a much longer jail sentence if she had not taken into consideration his young age and difficult background.
On earlier occasions the court had heard of significant trauma Georgiadis faced during his childhood.
