Two men will face trial over their alleged involvement in a group fight at a north Melbourne shopping centre, where some participants wielded machetes in front of members of the public.
Wollert man Ricky Machado and Izaia Atkinson, 19 and from Thomastown, faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday over a “confrontation” at Epping Plaza’s food court, called the Urban Diner, in June 2024.
CCTV played in court showed a group of mostly hooded people, some holding what appeared to be machetes, running into frame and getting into a scuffle.
A woman could be seen ushering three children away from the groups’ path as the situation unfolded.
It was conceded by a witness that Mr Machado was not depicted with a weapon.
Mr Atkinson is charged with affray and violent disorder.
He and Mr Machado pleaded not guilty and were committed to stand trial, with a directions hearing at the County Court set down for March 7.
Mr Atkinson’s bail was fixed and Mr Macado’s was extended.
