A man remains under police guard in hospital after he and his passenger were arrested following a car crash and pursuit in Melbourne’s north.

Darebin detectives noticed a silver Kia Certato travelling at high speed on Dickens St, Lalor, on May 7 at 12.30am.

They tried to intercept the car but it sped off and ran a red light at the intersection of High St and Kingsway Drive.

It then almost crashed into another car, and police called in the Air Wing helicopter to follow the car and put stop sticks at Henderson Rd in Reservoir.

The car crashed into a ditch on nearby Hickford St just before 1am, and two men fled the scene.

Police arrested the duo nearby after a short foot chase.

The driver, a 29-year-old Windsor man was taken to The Austin hospital under police guard following the crash.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Lana Wilson said the man was in a stable condition with minor injuries.

He is expected to be charged with conduct endangering life, dangerous driving, traffic offences and committing indictable offences while on bail.

His passenger, a 19-year-old Reservoir man, was interviewed by police and released pending further inquiries.

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
