A man allegedly caught his neighbour spray painting his mountain bike, which had just been stolen from his backyard, in their Reservoir street on Tuesday night.

But Daniel Walters, who was allegedly also using a head torch taken from the man’s vehicle, told police it was “a dog act to steal from a mate”, and he “wouldn’t do that”.

Walters fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, June 24, charged with handling stolen goods while on bail for multiple other alleged crimes, including vehicle thefts and possessing controlled weapons and drugs.

The court heard someone broke into Walters’ neighbour’s backyard overnight on June 22-23, fstealing Airpods and a head torch from his car.

A mountain bike was also taken from the property.

The alleged victim then allegedly saw Walters spray painting the bike in their street about 8pm on June 23, while using the stolen head torch, which was marked with his initials.

The man confronted Walters before Walters allegedly gave the bike back to the owner and rode away on another bike.

When he was arrested by police soon after he told them he had found the bike in a park.

Walters had only been granted bail before the court on June 5 after he was charged with stealing a car and handling stolen number plates.

When he applied for bail again on June 24, having spent a night behind bars, Magistrate Meagan Keogh said she was concerned by his alleged persistent offending.

“He’s on a real roll at the moment,” she said.

Ms Keogh said he would probably be arrested next month, looking at his track record.

He was also facing charges for breaching a community corrections order.

Walters’ lawyer argued his client wouldn’t be likely to receive a jail sentence for the alleged crimes, and time on remand could be extensive with delays imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Ms Keogh bailed Walters to be assessed for supervision by the Court Integrated Services Program next month.
