Primary school students from the UK and Australia write thriller for adults

Hundreds of primary school kids from around the world created this new horror show for adults, featuring giant monsters, demonic children and a disgruntled teen guitarist. Here’s where you can get your scare before it heads off to tour the globe.

It starts out like every great horror story should.

An eerie evening, missing people, and an impending zombie apocalypse.

The difference is this thriller was written by more than 200 primary school students from across the world.

The Cabin! presented by Darebin Speakeasy, drops the audience into a school musical where things mysteriously start to go wrong.

More than 200 primary school students were involved in the show’s creation.

It features giant inflatable monsters, talking bins and is brought to life by two straight-laced adults, five demonic children and a disgruntled teen guitarist.

The performance was created by Joseph O’Farrell, Emily Tomlins and primary school students from the UK and Australia over three years.

O’Farrell started the project during a school visit in South London, where he often took classes, workshops and holiday programs for schools without an art program.

Going from school to school, classes would vary between set design, script writing and character creation.

“It kind of left me with this rich, hand-drawn tapestry to try and piece together when we got into the rehearsal room,” O’Farrell said.

And it’s not your typical childhood fears, with promises of a truly gory and horrifying experience.

How fast would a zombie outbreak spread in Melbourne?

“These kids have thought up really creepy ways to scare adults. Fantastical creatures and narratives are weaved through the show, it’s wild,” O’Farrell said.

Described as if “David Lynch was to direct a school musical” the show will include live music and projection too.

“It’s never boring, that’s for sure,” O’Farrell said.
