An 11-year-old boy who is in hospital and awaiting surgery after being mauled by a dog in Diamond Creek yesterday has spoken out about the terrifying incident.

Aidan Clonan was walking his bike uphill along Bishop Ave about 6pm when a passing canine attacked him.

He is currently at the Austin Hospital with two puncture wounds in his right leg and will have surgery later today.

“I was walking past the dog when it just jumped at me and bit me — I was really scared,” Aidan said.

“I just ran away as fast as I could.”

Aidan also told the Leader two witnesses stopped to help walk him home, while the dog and its owner continued walking in the opposite direction.

Aidan’s father Troy Clonan said he got a shock when he heard the news.

“The wound was very messy, but he’s doing all right now — he’s a brave boy,” he said.

“We don’t know why the dog owner didn’t stop to help — she could have had the fright of her life and taken the dog away from the scene — we just don’t know.

“I’m just hoping he does not suffer any long term psychological effects — its lots of trauma for a little mind.”

Diamond Creek Senior Constable David Garlick said a hunt was underway to find the dog and its owner.

“We are looking for the woman who owns the dog — we don’t want this dog on the streets attacking others,” he said.
