He said he had locked it up and when he returned he found it was missing.
“I looked around and then looked again thinking it couldn’t happen, I felt really sad,” he said. “All the money I spent on that, it was a lot of the money I’d saved up.”
After the Leader published Charlie’s sad story, 3AW’s Neil Mitchell took up the cause, recieving multiple offers of a new mountain bike.
Charlie’s mother, Paula Thomson, said she was overwhelmed by the generosity shown.
After falling in love with mountain biking thanks to hours spent preparing jumps and tracks with his older cousin, Charlie became a regular at the MyBike store on Sydney Rd as he planned his purchase.
While Brunswick police continue to investigate the theft, Senior Sargeant Michael Moloney said police were planning a sausage sizzle fundraiser to help Charlie buy a replacement bike.
A collection at the station has already raised more than $100 to be donated to the cause.
The fundraiser will take place at the police’s Find Your Bike Day to be held at the Brunswick Police Station on December 8, an event to allow bike owners a chance to claim any two wheelers that have been collected by police.
Ms Thomson, said the police had been supportive during the process and thanked them for their efforts in trying to recover the bike.
“We’re all looking forward to seeing him back on a new bike soon,” she said.
