A BULLEEN woman is appealing for information on the whereabouts of an electric bike stolen from her shed earlier this month, leaving her disabled son isolated.
Carol Szekfy says the theft of the bike has left her 40-year-old son Trent Smeddon, who has an acquired brain injury, with no means to get around the community.
Mr Smeddon’s injury means he can’t walk more than about 100m at a time with the bike invaluable for getting out of his Willow Bend house.
But the thieves left behind a battery and computer vital to the operation of the bike, meaning it would be all but useless to them, she said.
Now she fears the bike, which is valued about $7500, has been dumped.
“It’s Trent’s only form of transport. We were conscious to buy him something that was totally safe, not just for him but for others,” she said.
“He can’t walk more than about 100m and he’s exhausted and he can’t ride an ordinary bike, this is his only option.”
Mr Smeddon suffered a serious brain injury after falling off a fence when he was 34. He spent about 11 months in rehab learning to walk and talk again after the fall.
“The thieves would know the bike was worth a bit — it was top of the market, but it’s useless without the computer and battery,” Ms Szekfy said.
Manningham CIU Sergeant Anthony Downes said police believed the bike, which was a Haibike and has a blue and black frame, might have been dumped somewhere.
