A GROUP of mothers want a path built through a Fitzroy North park to make it more accessible for pram-pushing parents.

The “Share Rushall Reserve — Build The Path” group has been set up to campaign Yarra Council to follow through with a draft plan to construct a $600,000 shared path through Rushall Reserve.

Clifton Hill mother Madeline Farrugia said a fence at Rushall Station made the park inaccessible for young families.

The group has been set up to give a different perspective from the Friends of Rushall Reserve group, which is opposing the path.

Ms Farrugia said she had to walk about an extra 1km along Rushall Cres to the end of Holden St to access the park.

Her playgroup first met at Rushall Reserve about a year ago, but she said many people got lost trying to get into the park.

The council has already spent about $65,000 on survey and design work for the path, which cyclists say needs to be built to avoid a “missing link” along the Capital City and Merri Creek trails.

Ms Farrugia said the reserve should be a place shared for everyone in the community.

“We found it quite inaccessible and we haven’t actually been back because it is so hard to get into,” Ms Farrugia said.

“We think a path will help people discover what is a pretty well hidden gem.”

Management from Rushall Park, a nearby retirement village, have also thrown their support behind the path.

Phillip Wohlers, the general manager of Old Colonists, which runs the village, said the path was needed to direct cyclists away from the underpass at Rushall Station.

“The amount of cycling traffic that comes through the underpass and up the Capital City Trail does pose a risk to our residents being hit by cyclists,” Mr Wohlers said.

The council received almost two hours worth of submissions opposing the path during public question time at Tuesday night’s meeting. The opportunity to provide feedback on the plan will close on May 20.
