A much-loved pooch has finally made his way to the UK to be reunited with his owner, a month after he escaped a Tullamarine pet transport company.
Jason Whatnall and his partner Nick were eagerly waiting Milo’s arrival after his 17-day escapade around Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
The five-year-old Jack Russell Terrier disappeared on March 18 after he was dropped off at an international pet transport company.
Animal rescuers Nigel Williamson and Toby Mitchell captured the dog after a rigorous two-and-a-half week search that culminated with Mr Whatnall’s clothing being the only thing to entice the pooch back.
Mr Whatnall said Milo was settling well into his new home in the UK.
“We’re so glad to have Milo back in our arms — he’s already settling well and is really comfortable,” he said.
In a video shared with the Herald Sun, Mr Whatnall and his partner Nick can be seen waiting eagerly for Milo with tears rolling down Mr Whatnall’s face.
“Milo, my boy,” Mr Whatnall says as he sees Milo for the first time in 35 days.
“Milo, my boy. My baby … good boy.
“You’re back to us, you little rascal … my little one.”
Animal rescuer Nigel Williamson, who spearheaded the search for Milo, took to social media to express his gratitude for “every single person that put time and effort into finding and transporting Milo back”.
“It’s a collaboration of like-minded people working together to get the right result. Watching Milo walking down the street with his family … This is the reward I get, and it is why I have rescued and returned animals to their owners for the last 38 years,” he wrote.
Milo lost 20 per cent of his body weight while wandering the streets and was under the care of several vets with a “strict feeding plan” to spoonfeed him every two hours, helping him regain his health to able to hop on the plane and reunite with his family.
