Max the german shepherd has been given a second chance at life after being abandoned by his owners.
The eight-year-old pooch was left at a property in early January after the previous occupants sold it and moved on, insisting he came with the house.
The new owners were shocked, and unable to look after him, and so Max was taken in by German Shepherd Rescue Victoria.
Max was in bad shape – nearly blind, and with a badly matted coat.
But after a little tender loving care he has now found his fur-ever home with Fawkner couple Maria and Ryan, who have gone above and beyond to settle the rescue pup into his new life.
Maria Bell said when they first got Max, he was too scared to even come inside.

“I don’t think he lived in a house before so he’d only slept on concrete, it was really sad,” she said.
The first night Max stayed with his new family, Ryan took a sleeping bag and slept with him outside after he started howling at 5am.
Maria slept in the hallway on the couch with the back door open.
Their efforts paid off when, slowly but surely, Max finally entered the house for the first time.
“I was actually lying on my tummy studying and I had my back to Max, it was maybe the middle of the night and he came into the house and he put his paw on me,” Ms Bell said.
“It shocked me and I was so happy – at first he would only come in for a little and now he doesn’t want to leave the house.”

Ms Bell said Max’s true personality had really started to shine through.
“He’s more confident and cheeky now – we love him,” she said.
“Max takes loyalty very seriously so he follows me like a shadow.”
German Shepherd Rescue social media producer Jacqui Hill said the brave pooch was now taking medication in hopes to regain some of his lost sight.
“If it had been treated at the time, he probably wouldn’t have lost his sight which is a shame,” she said.
