An alleged coward punch attack during a road rage incident in Docklands has turned a “fit and healthy” Princes Hill father’s life upside down.
Martin Smith, 62, has been left with a brain injury and was in a coma and on life support for more than a week following a small traffic collision where another driver allegedly assaulted him on November 4.
The alleged violent beating occurred along Spencer St after two vehicles collided in what police described as a “minor” incident about 7.30pm Saturday evening.
It is understood a 34-year-old man from Tarneit exited his vehicle moments later before he allegedly set upon Mr Smith.
The Tarneit man was charged with recklessly cause serious injury, recklessly cause injury and unlawful assault.
He was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 22 January.
Mr Smith’s daughter Jes Egan said the incident had devastated her entire family.
“My dad is 62 and was fit and healthy, and working a physical job.
“All of that has been taken away from him during an incident that should have never happened.”
Mrs Egan and her family have created a GoFundMe page to help pay for her father’s ongoing medical costs and rehabilitation.
“My dad was always the first person to help anybody out,” she said.
“Even at 62 he was still helping everyone move house or building things they needed.
“Now because of something that was done to him he needs help.”
Her mother, Cindee Smith has been deeply shaken by the attack.
“She just wants him back, she has missed her companionship,” said Mrs Egan.
Mr Smith has left intensive care and is now in rehabilitation for his serious brain injury.
“We all just wanted him to survive and now he has gotten past the ICU and the life support, it is all starting to sink in,” she said.
“He has not recovered his full memory yet.
“It is still too early to determine the extent of dad’s injuries and we don’t know if he will ever be back to what he was.”
