A man has walked free from custody less than 24 hours after unleashing an alleged road rage attack near Melbourne’s Docklands which left another man fighting for life in hospital.

The alleged violent beating occurred along Spencer St after two vehicles collided in what police described as a “minor” incident about 7.30pm Saturday evening.

It is understood a 34-year-old man from Tarneit exited his vehicle moments later before he allegedly set upon the Princes Hill man, aged 62.

Police cordoned off Spencer St between Lonsdale and La Trobe Streets following the assault, while the alleged offender later handed himself into a nearby police station.

Detectives on Sunday afternoon charged the Tarneit man with recklessly cause serious injury, recklessly cause injury and unlawful assault.

He was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 22 January.

The older man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital where he remained in a critical but stable condition on Sunday, having suffered significant head trauma.

The Herald Sun understands the parties were not known to each other.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam footage or any information to contact Crime Stoppers.
