A loner who lived a secluded life with his illiterate uncle in a housing commission flat in northern Victoria harboured a secret stash of sickening child abuse videos depicting young boys being raped, a court has heard.

Pensioner Mark Moore, 37, who has received disability payments for the past six years due to his epilepsy, was sentenced at the County Court on August 24 to at least nine months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing child pornography.

Police raided Moore’s Kerang flat in October last year after receiving a tip through the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, Judge Chris Ryan said.

There, they found more than 13,000 vile videos and images, some which fell into the worst category of abuse.

Boys as young as three were featured in some of the material, while other videos showed boys aged about seven trying to fight off their abusers before they were raped.

Animated images of characters from the wildly popular children’s Pokemon cartoons performing oral sex on each other were also discovered on Moore’s devices, the court heard.

Moore’s lawyer told the court her client was emotionally underdeveloped and didn’t fully comprehend the seriousness of his crimes when he committed them.

But Judge Ryan said this excuse “did not sit well” with Moore’s admission to a court psychologist that he tried to hide his offending because he knew it was wrong.

“You instructed (her) that you knew that your conduct was illegal and that you had to hide the images from others. Further you told (her) that you did not consider that the children in the images were victims of sexual abuse, stating that you found the images and videos sexually arousing,” Judge Ryan said.

In sentencing Moore to 15 months’ jail, Judge Ryan said he had take into account only a limited number of the illicit images discovered fell into the worst categories of abuse.

He also noted Moore told police he’d only shared abuse material on one occasion.

Moore was convicted as a sex offender and will be subject to regulations under the Sex Offenders Registration Act for the next 15 years.
