A SCISSOR-WIELDING man who bashed a local mayor during a psychotic episode on Chinese New Year has been jailed for two years and nine months.
Jeamy Olaa, 23, pleaded guilty to a shocking daylight rampage that took place on High St, Preston, on February 13, 2016.
The County Court heard Mr Olaa viciously attacked two bus passengers in an unprovoked assault, holding one man in a headlock while punching him in the head more than a dozen times.
Both victims suffered bruising and lacerations in the fight.
Mr Olaa exited the bus outside Preston Town Hall, screaming profanities before assaulting a 79-year old bystander, knocking him to the ground.
Vince Fontana, who was then mayor of Darebin, attempted to intervene, but was punched in the head.
Mr Olaa then stormed into a nearby shop and lunged at the owners, holding two pairs of scissors, taking $1000 cash.
Mr Olaa was subdued and held by witnesses until the police arrived.
The court heard Mr Olaa was suffering an acute psychotic episode and had a long history of substance abuse and criminal offences.
County Court Judge Damian Murphy described Mr Olaa’s troubled history, beginning in war-torn Sudan.
Judge Murphy said an incorrect birth certificate led to Mr Olaa being incarcerated for previous offences in adult prison as a juvenile.
“Regardless of what happened in the past, you are now an adult, and were an adult at the time you committed these offences,” he said.
Mr Olaa pleaded guilty to three charges of intentionally causing injury, armed robbery and assault.
Judge Murphy sentenced Mr Olaa to two years and nine months jail, with a 17 month non-parole period, on March 22.
