An 18-year-old allegedly used a metal sign to smash his way into Chemist Warehouse Epping to steal bottles of prescription medication.

Police allege Yaasir Moose committed the theft shortly after he stocked up on coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts at the nearby 7-Eleven, Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court has heard.

The Epping man fronted court on Thursday, April 16, to apply for bail, having been held in custody since he was arrested hours after the alleged theft on March 31.

Detective Senior Constable Sam Robinson told the court police allege Moose broke into Chemist Warehouse Epping about 3.05am, repeatedly kicking the glass panel of the shopfront before picking up a metal sign to smash the glass.

He allegedly then climbed through the broken window and went to the back of the store, where he filled his pockets with prescription medications.

The court heard police allege Moose arrived at the store in a black Holden sedan, which patrolling police then spotted at a residential street in Epping about 7am.

Sen-Constable Robinson said police searched the car and allegedly found seven bottles of prescription medication.

During the search, Moose approached the car and was arrested.

The court heard CCTV footage showed he had bought doughnuts and coffee at 7-Eleven Epping at 2.40am.

In the footage, he was allegedly wearing the same striped black hoodie and black pants as the slim African male who was captured on CCTV committing the break-in at Chemist Warehouse 25 minutes later.

Sen-Constable Robinson said police did not want Moose bailed, noting he was unemployed and committing crimes was believed to be his primary source of income.

Magistrate Helen Murphy said the serious allegations against Moose were concerning.

“But he’s very, very young and he’s been in adult prison for 16 days in onerous conditions,” she said, referring to the more stringent measures in place in custody because of COVID-19.

Ms Murphy said she did not want to release Moose without any level of supervision, and suggested he be assessed as a candidate for the youth justice supervision program.

She said delays in the court system meant his bail application would be reconsidered on Monday, April 27, once he had been able to complete an assessment.
