Fuelled by drugs, a Macleod man’s month-long reign of terror across the northern suburbs came to a sudden end after a last minute escape attempt.

A man who split the front door of an Ivanhoe house trying to kick his way inside also stole two cars and used stolen bank cards during a month-long crime spree.

Jacob Mitrovski fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, May 4, having been locked up for 102 days after police caught him jumping out of the window of a two-storey house when they went to arrest him.

The court heard the Macleod man’s month of drug-fuelled offending began overnight on December 22-23 when he stole a 2018 Nissan from an Eltham garage.

The 30-year-old used a credit card found inside the car to pay for a $52.50 taxi ride he took from Macleod to Box Hill at 3.30am on December 23.

CCTV then captured Mitrovski trying to break into and damaging an Ivanhoe home in the middle of the afternoon on January 19, First Constable Irwin Ee told the court.

Mitrovski knocked on the door of the house about 4pm, getting no answer, before he checked in the garage and the mailbox.

He then repeatedly kicked the front door, causing the timber frame to split, but was still unable to get inside the house.

He drove away, leaving about $300 damage to the door.

The court heard he was with a woman when he broke into a car parked in a Yallambie street overnight on January 21-22, stealing a handbag containing a bank card.

The pair then used the card to pay for a $35.05 feed at Yallambie McDonalds, and she used the card to pay for $147.50 worth of goods at 7-Eleven Yallambie.

Mitrovski was again with her when he stole a BMW from an Eaglemont driveway about 6.21pm that day.

The court heard police went to a Yallambie address on January 23 to arrest Mitrovski.

After the occupant let them inside, they found Mitrovski jumping out a window on the second-storey, having taken the flyscreen off.

Officers arrested him and only discovered he had various stolen bank cards and licences after he asked to get his bag from on the couch inside.

Police found the cards stuffed down the couch cushion where he had been sitting when they arrived at the house.

Mitrovski pleaded guilty to the charges against him, with his lawyer telling the court he had struggled with drug use since he was 15.

She said his offending was to fuel his drug addiction, with some of the crimes committed under the influence of GHB.

She said she had been told it was unlikely Mitrovski would be accepted for a community corrections order, but said he would be able to live with a friend in Box Hill when he was released from jail.

Magistrate Ian Alger said looking at Mitrovksi’s history with corrections orders the logical conclusion would be that another would set him up for further failure.

He sentenced Mitrovski to nine months’ jail, saying it would have been 12 months if he hadn’t pleaded guilty.

His licence was also cancelled for 12 months.
