LABOR has promised half a million dollars for West Coburg Sports Club to upgrade Morris Reserve if the party wins the November state election.

Brunswick state Labor MP Jane Garrett this afternoon promised a Labor Government would provide $500,000 for West Coburg Sports Club to build new change rooms, improve existing facilities and extend the oval at Morris Reserve.

And Moreland Mayor Lambros Tapinos confirmed the council would match the funding, making it a $1 million project.

Ms Garrett said extending the oval would mean it was compliant for future Essendon District Football League matches. The football club currently uses Shore Reserve for home games.

“Coburg West Football Club is a very strong club which performs well,” Ms Garrett said.

“It’s exciting for the hours and hours that families and community members put into growing these clubs.”

She also said there was a need for female change rooms, as the current facilities had none.

West Coburg Sports Club includes the suburb’s football, netball, softball, cricket and little athletics clubs.

Sports club president John Appleyard said the money would be fantastic — if it came through.

“It would be a whole change for the club completely,” Mr Appleyard said.

“For many years, we can’t have functions because the facilities are not good enough.”

He said the existing clubrooms seated 30 to 40 people, but the club wanted to hold events for more than 100 people.

“The club’s grown,” he said.

“We have some 800-odd members, it’s just impossible to get them all together.”

Cr Tapinos said if Labor won the election and came through with the promise, the council would match the money.

“When we get grants from the government, we prioritise those projects and we get them done,” he said.

This promise brings Ms Garrett’s Moreland sports offerings to $1.4 million.

The state election is on Saturday, November 29.
