A man accused of drug dealing allegedly told police the bottled substance they found in his car was hand sanitiser — not GHB.
And when police allegedly found Kevin Williams driving around Reservoir at 3am with two other men and drugs, one of them claimed they were out “to take the dog for a walk”.
The Kurunjang man fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday, June 26, having been hit with drug trafficking charges twice in two weeks.
The court heard police allegedly saw Williams run a red light on Plenty Rd, Reservoir, about 3.20am on Wednesday, June 24, before police found him parked in a residential street.
Constable Nicole Kernic said officers saw him and two other men rummaging around in the car, before the group became nervous when police approached.
One of the men allegedly said they were out to “take the dog for a walk”, before police found Williams’ bag contained 2g of methamphetamine and 156mil of GHB.
A notebook containing drug quantities and dollar values was also allegedly in the bag, along with a large number of zip lock bags and Williams’ charge sheets from an earlier arrest.
Constable Kernic said Williams had $905 cash in his wallet, believed to be the proceeds of crime.
Williams had only been granted bail on June 11, after police found him parked in the same car in a carpark at Elizabeth St, Richmond, about 1am.
He was with another man and three bags of methamphetamine, five caps of methamphetamine and a bottle of GHB were allegedly found in a bag in the car.
Williams allegedly had $1317 cash in his wallet.
Williams’ lawyer told the court there had been a dog in the back seat when his client was arrested, and rather than rummaging around, the men were trying to calm the pet.
He said police had not yet proven that the alleged GHB wasn’t a type of hand sanitiser.
The court heard police had shaken the bottle and a bottle of hand sanitiser, finding the substances reacted differently, but the kind of test was not conclusive.
William’s partner told the court the cash in his wallet had been intended to register one of their cars.
The lawyer argued Williams’ had no relevant criminal history.
Magistrate Jennifer Tregent said the allegations were “somewhat troubling”, particularly because the men in the car weren’t known to Williams’ partner, but agreed to release him on bail.
