A man who’s being held in prison on disputed charges has offered to plead guilty to “whatever” a court wants if he can get his stamp collection and clothes back.
The offer was among a series of amusing comments Jake Hancock, who is also known to the law as Jake Derrick, made before Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 3, after refusing to be represented by a lawyer.
The 30-year-old Wonthaggi man sought to dispute the charges against him, which include
stealing a ute, attempted burglary and resisting police, on his own, saying his criminal history had given him enough experience.
“I’ve spent most of my life in court — since I was about four years old — so I’ve got a pretty good understanding of the law and how it works,” he told the court.
Hancock initially tried to have all the charges dropped, before agreeing to make some concessions.
“If (the police) want to do this legal mumbo jumbo, I stole the car five minutes before they arrested me,” he said.
He then offered to give in to all charges in return for the stamp collection and hoodie that was seized when he was arrested in Reservoir on July 20.
“The only thing I want back is my stamp collection and my clothes and I’ll plead guilty to whatever you want,” Hancock said.
And he made no attempt to hide his stance on charges for another upcoming court date when Magistrate Denise Livingstone inquired about them.
“Oh yes, I was hungry so I broke into a couple cars to get money,” he said.
Senior Constable Lauren Dri told the court Hancock had allegedly been caught on CCTV trying to steal from storage units in an underground carpark on Hotham St, Preston on July 16.
Hancock allegedly used an angle grinder to try to cut the locks but was unsuccessful, then was arrested driving a stolen ute with stolen number plates in Reservoir just after midnight on July 20.
He allegedly had more stolen number plates in the car, then smashed up an interview room at Heidelberg police station, damaging a door and destroying chairs.
Hancock was unable to resolve the charges at the hearing.
