A man known to police as a “prolific dishonesty offender” has told a court he would have run from police if he’d known the ute he was driving had been stolen.

Police allegedly had to brace a door at Heidelberg police station while an enraged Jake Derrick, also known to the law as Jake Hancock, broke chairs against it after he was arrested.

The 30-year-old fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 23, charged over a number of crimes in Reservoir and Preston.

The court heard Derrick had allegedly left his blood inside and over cars he broke into in Reservoir.

Derrick was arrested just after midnight on Monday, July 20 when police saw him driving a stolen white ute in Hughes Pde, Reservoir with stolen number plates.

He allegedly stopped and got out shortly after police put on their lights and sirens, yelling about the police stalking him.

The court heard he was wanted over an alleged burglary and police found another set of stolen plates in the ute.

Police didn’t interview Derrick because he was “erratic and irate”.

He then allegedly used chairs to smash the interview room door about 3.25am, breaking two chairs and causing extensive damage to the door, before he was capsicum-sprayed and taken to a cell by six officers.

On July 16 he had allegedly driven the stolen ute, bearing different stolen plates, into the underground carpark at 215 Bell St, Preston where he tried to cut locks to storage units.

He also allegedly broke into four cars in Reservoir and tried to get into a fifth early on February 8.

Derrick allegedly used a tool to open doors of the cars, shattering their windows and stealing a $1100 GPS and sunglasses.

He allegedly cut himself, leaving his blood inside a car and on the outside of another.

Police told the court the Wonthaggi man was a “prolific dishonesty offender”, who was known to offend in Melbourne’s north and was extremely violent due to “rampant methamphetamine abuse and unknown psychiatric issues”.

He was given a 70-day jail sentence in April for assaulting an emergency service worker on duty and theft.

Derrick, who applied for bail without a lawyer, said he was being held unlawfully, having “been snatched off the street” by police.

He said he had stopped taking ice because it sent him “too crazy” and that he had no idea the ute was stolen.

“I wouldn’t have pulled over and stopped if I’d known it was a stolen car,” he said.

Derrick said he was working as a plaster and had been down in Melbourne trying to find his recently born daughter.

Magistrate Jennifer Tregent said Derrick needed more evidence to meet the test to be granted bail and should use his lawyer’s help.
