A drug-affected Greensborough motorist became enraged and kicked his car after crashing into rubbish bins. But by the time police arrived, he had calmed down enough to pass out in the front seat with his feet hanging out the window.

Indi Richards was heavily drug-affected, breaching Melbourne’s lockdown laws and had been driving a stolen car with stolen number plates, Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court heard.

The 26-year-old fronted the court on September 16 to plead guilty to a range of charges.

He was arrested early on September 4 after a Greensborough resident was woken to the sounds of a man yelling in the street.

The witness phoned 000 about 5.58am after going outside and seeing Richards, who had driven a car up over the kerb and crashed into rubbish bins, screaming and kicking the car.

But when police approached the scene minutes later, they could only see Richards’ feet sticking out the car window, with him having passed out in the driver’s seat.

He told police he’d taken GHB the night before when he was arrested.

Inside the car, which had been stolen from Viewbank days earlier, police found 36.59g of GHB and three sets of other number plates.

Richards didn’t have a valid reason for having left home in line with Melbourne’s COVID-19 regulations.

The Greensborough man also pleaded guilty to a theft from June 20.

The court heard Richards had ADHD and had struggled with drug issues for sometime.

He had prior convictions for thefts, burglaries and violence, and had previously been handed a 12-month jail sentence.

Magistrate Denise Livingstone sentenced Richards to 42 days’ jail, with 13 having already been served, followed by a 12-month community corrections order.
