Two armed thugs are on the run after a man was bashed in a Broadmeadows carpark, while two boys have been freed from a dumpster straight into the arms of waiting police after hiding from security. See all the crime making news this week in Hume.

A man was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries after he was bashed by two thugs armed with a knife in the Seabrook Reserve carpark.

The 29-year-old Cranbourne man was attacked by two men of Middle Eastern appearance about 7.30pm on August 29, who produced a knife and demanded his belongings.

Fawkner Embona Taskforce detective Sergeant Daniel Jacuta said the man tried to run away but the offenders gave chase, assaulted him and stole his wallet.

He said the duo then ran off along Goulburn St. “The victim was taken to the Northern Hospital with bruising around his eye and cheekbone, and bleeding around his mouth,” Sgt Jacuta said.

He has since been released. Both men were described as aged between 20-25, with one about 170cm tall and the other 180cm.

Two adventurous boys made a lucky escape before being captured in Broadmeadows on Wednesday morning.

The pair were at a Taylors Lakes shopping centre on Melton Highway when they hid in a dumpster while running from security just before 4am.

Leading Senior Constable Kendra Jackson said a short time later a rubbish truck collected the dumpster and unloaded its contents, including the duo, into the truck.

Coincidently, the truck’s next stop was Broadmeadows police station where the driver heard the boys’ pleas for help and rescued the pair straight into the arms of waiting officers.

The boys, aged 11 and 14, suffered minor injuries and were treated by paramedics.

No police action was taken.

CRAIGIEBURN

A group of fire bugs are on the run after they tried to set a disabled toilet cubicle alight in Central Park Ave, Craigieburn about 1.10pm on August 31.

Hume Detective Senior Sergeant Ray Freeman said a witness saw a number of boys climbing onto the brick toilet block before smoke started billowing from the building.

“The witness confronted the boys and asked what they were doing,” Sen-Sergeant Freeman said.

“They said they were just smoking inside the toilets before they ran off.”

He said Craigieburn CFA arrived to find the youths had lit a pile of toilet paper and branches but it only left charred marks on the wall.

The group of about 10 boys were described as of Middle Eastern appearance and aged 15-16.

Another fire was also started in bushland behind Waterdale Rise in Craigieburn about 3.40am on August 31.

Sen-Sergeant Freeman said a man was woken by his dogs barking and called police as he thought there was an intruder in his backyard.

When police arrived they found a 1sq m fire had been lit behind the property using paper and cloth.

AIRPORT WEST

A drug-fuelled truck driver has been caught behind the wheel on the Western Ring Road.

State highway patrol officers intercepted a large tipper truck about 12.30pm on September 5 and made the driver take a roadside drug test.

Leading Senior Constable Rohan Imms said the 44-year-old Drummond man tested positive and is expected to be charged on summons.

The intercept was part of the statewide Operation Argus that focused on impaired driving, excessive speed and driver distraction from September 5-8.

Six teenage boys have been charged after high quality electrical goods were allegedly stolen from stores in Airport West, Sunshine, Brunswick, Hoppers Crossing, Maribyrnong, Brighton, Epping, Thomastown, Pakenham and Nunawading between August 22 and September 1.

Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said 11 boys were arrested in Malcolm Court, Kealba on September 1.

Two 17-year-olds, three 16-year-olds and a 14-year-old were charged and will face a children’s court.

The remaining five were released pending further investigation.

Police also recovered a large amount of allegedly stolen goods including mobile phones, tablets and computers.
