Six schnitzels stacked on each other might be the eye-catching part of the Schnitzelmeister, but it is the sides that will bring even the most dedicated power-eater unstuck.
I took on the eating challenge — now available at The Bavarian restaurant at Highpoint and 24 other locations in Australia — and while I didn’t finish it, there’s no reason why it’s not possible for those with more guts.
Then again, Highpoint Bavarian store manager Adiel Onumah said that of the customers who have attempted the challenge he has only seen one complete it, and he thinks those four little side dishes might be the reason why.
“Those sides really get them — I saw a couple guys eat all the schnitzels easily but then couldn’t get the sides done,” he said.
Eaters are given one hour to complete the stack of loaded schnitzels, which are smothered in cheese, tomato sauce and ham, as well as four sides.
The challenge is all about promoting The Bavarian’s new range of loaded (Mexican, Italian, meatball, Texan and Caesar salad) schnitzels.
Entering the challenge, I tried to map out a game plan — decline creamy and potato-based side choices, and try to knock off one schnitzel and a portion of sides every ten minutes.
Easy right? That perfect melted cheese and rich red sauce couldn’t be too much of a problem for me.

By the halfway mark it was all going down easily and I was even ahead of time, but the combination of sauerkraut and red cabbage as two of my chosen sides was starting to put a lid on my stomach.
Not only that, an unintended effect of my game plan had cooled the schnitzels, making them more difficult to consume.
In the final 15 minutes my intake slowed to a crawl — much like my actions of the rest of the day — and my stomach hit the wall.
Mentally I was gone and, and starting to have visions of crumbed chickens mocking me.
I ended up leaving one and a half schnitzels on the plate, along with some of those pesky sides.
A disappointment for me and my entire family, but not an entirely disgraceful effort.
The challenge is free if you’re successful, will set you back $80 if you’re not.
