Funding for schools in State Budget boon for parents in growing Hume

The State Budget has delivered investment in schools, infrastructure, community health and even something for the fourth-legged kind in Hume.

Education was a major winner in this year’s State Budget with funding to build new schools in Craigieburn, Greenvale and Merrifield.

Craigieburn South Secondary School, Greenvale North West Primary School and Merrifield West Primary School are slated to open by 2021.

Craigieburn South Secondary School will get $10.8 million for stage 1 works, due for completion next year.

The budget also includes $3.1 million for Gladstone Views Primary School to redevelop old classrooms, as well as major improvements to its senior block.

Gladstone Park Primary School received $252,000 for planning towards a $2.5 million upgrade.

Elsewhere, the budget included $8 million for the Broadmeadows Family Drug Treatment Court.

Broadmeadows Town Centre will share in $3.1 million to go towards its ongoing revitalisation.

There will be $2 million for works to build or expand 10 community hospitals, including one in Craigieburn.

The new $10.5 million Craigieburn fire station, for which potential sites are being investigated, received $3.3 million, while Broadmeadows fire station will receive $850,000 towards a $2.6 million refurbishment.

Yuroke state Labor MP Ros Spence said the government’s investment in new schools would benefit children for years to come.

“This is (also) the first step in building a community hospital in Craigieburn, which once complete, will give local families confidence that the very best care is just around the corner,” she said.

A new off-leash dog park will be built in Hume, while $49 million will go to new sewer works in Craigieburn, Mickleham, Kalkallo and Donnybrook.

The $74.5 million redevelopment of public housing in Westmeadows received $8.6 million.

Jacana School for Autism will get $966,000 as part of the asbestos safety program.
