Readers have contacted the Diamond Valley Leader, frustrated the project hasn’t been listed as part of the State Government’s level crossing removal project.
Sarah Thompson said it divided the community, particularly the retail and sport precincts, and was a “nightmare” to drive through during peak periods.
“I’d hate to imagine what would happen when everyone was trying to evacuate if there was a fire,” Mrs Thompson said.
Currently there are two level crossings in Banyule and six in Nillumbik.
Under the state government’s Level Crossing Removal Project, 50 of the most dangerous crossings are being removed, including Lower Plenty Rd in Rosanna and Grange Rd in Alphington on the Hurstbridge Line.
Nillumbik Council mayor Peter Clarke has joined the chorus saying Diamond Creek is one of the “most critical” crossings that needs to be addressed.
He suggested dropping the train line and reconfiguring the roads.
“Then from council’s perspective, we would be keen to engage in improvement of the urban landscape through that area,” he said.
Cr Clarke also said the shire wanted to advocate for the removal of level crossings at Diamond St in Eltham and Wattletree Rd in Eltham North.
Yan Yean state Labor MP Danielle Green said the only way Diamond Creek’s level crossing will be removed is through the Level Crossing Removal Project.
“As a Diamond Creek resident, I live each day with the congestion caused by the level crossing in the middle of our town,” Ms Green said.
“Diamond Creek, Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge residents and businesses overwhelmingly want this crossing removed, to enhance livability and safety — especially in case of bushfire.
“The fact is, if Matthew Guy and the Liberals are elected this year, the Level Crossing Removal Authority will be abolished. They said so late last year.”
