Essendon woman shocked to find brown snake in upstairs living room

It’s the last thing you’d expect to find in the second storey of your house, but an Essendon woman was greeted by the sight of one of the world’s most venomous snakes — and it’s just one of many caught by a snake catcher in the past month.

An Essendon woman received the shock of her life after stumbling across a baby eastern brown snake in the upstairs living room of her Essendon home.

Snake catcher Mark Pelley said he had been called to the property to catch the 15cm-long snake after it was spotted on the living room floor.

Mr Pelley, who goes by the name Snake Hunter, said when he arrived at the home the woman was paralysed with fear and standing on her couch.

He believed he knew how the snake made it up to the second floor.

“It was too small to climb the stairs, so either a pet has dragged it up there or someone has inadvertently taken it upstairs in a washing basket or shopping bag,” Mr Pelley said.

The snake catcher, who has been catching snakes for seven years, said the homeowner had no idea how dangerous the eastern brown snake really was.

“Even the baby ones, if they bite you it can still kill you,” Mr Pelley said.

The snake was one of four Pelley had captured from an upstairs room in the past month, with incidents also in Wallan, Greensborough and Ivanhoe.

He said it was possible for snakes to get to hard to reach places because they were so sneaky.

“Snakes are experts at hiding,” Mr Pelley said.

He said those that encountered a snake should back away slowly, call a snake catcherand watch it from a safe distance.

“The most important thing is to never ever try to touch it or handle it yourself,” he said.

“A snake will not bite you unless you harass it.”
