EDUCATION, transport, jobs and drug-related crime are the most pressing issues for voters in Yuroke, state election candidates believe.

Conducting questions without notice on Friday, Labor candidate Ros Spence said people were concerned about job security, travel times to and from work and the resulting pressures on families.

Greens candidate Natalie Abboud said education and transport were the biggest issues facing the electorate.

“I think that the restructuring of the TAFEs and the uni fees being increased means that people, especially in the demographic of Yuroke, are missing out on the same opportunities that perhaps other people closer to the CBD are getting,” Ms Abboud said.

Bus services also needed to be improved to the train station for residents commuting to the city, she said.

Independent candidate Mick Wilkins said drug trafficking and drug-related crime were the main issues.

“I think if you talk to police, over 80 per cent of the burglaries and robberies that happen in the area are drug-related,” Mr Wilkins said.

“I want to introduce the harshest penalties the nation’s ever seen, including a minimum of 25-year jail terms for major drug traffickers.”

Liberal candidate Phulvinderjit Grewal did not to return Leader’s calls.

Family First candidate Rodney Le Nepveu listed Shane Clark as a contact on the VEC roll. When phoned by Leader, Mr Clark said candidates could not be contacted directly for comment and would only respond by email.
