Three people have been charged following a wild police chase through Melbourne’s north yesterday that ended with a dramatic crash on the Metropolitan Ring Road.
Two men and three women were arrested on the tarmac, while a pair of police cars, and an SUV they were chasing, were all damaged when the pursuit was brought to a sudden conclusion near Edgars Rd just after 12.30pm.
All M80 Ring Road Altona-bound lanes were closed for about 40 minutes following the incident with significant traffic delays reported.
Witnesses reported seeing about a dozen police cars still at the scene about 1.30pm as traffic crawled through one right-hand lane.
All lanes reopened about 2.30pm once the scene was cleared.
The drama started when patrolling police spotted an alleged stolen vehicle on Barry Rd in Meadow Heights about 11.25am.
Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said the car was tracked by police until it was dumped in a carpark off Plenty Rd in Bundoora and the driver was picked up by another vehicle.
“Police monitored the second vehicle until a pursuit was initiated and the vehicle intercepted on the Northern Ring Road about 12.35pm,” Ms Batty said.
She said two police vehicles were damaged but no one was injured during the incident.
Witness Aaron Azza said he saw the alleged suspect hurtling along the tram tracks on Plenty Rd with police in hot pursuit, before veering on to the M80 Ring Rd ramp towards Dalton Rd.
Last night a Craigieburn man, 31, was remanded on charges of theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, evading police and driving while suspended.
A South Morang woman, 33, was also remanded on charges of theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a motor vehicle, evading police, unlicensed driving, drug possession and aggravated reckless exposure of emergency worker to risk by driving.
A Thornbury woman, 21, was remanded on the charge of obtaining property by deception.
A Mickleham man, 28, and a 23-year-old woman of no fixed address were released pending further investigation.
