Dog owners warned after vicious attack in Barry Rd, Lalor

A Lalor woman out for a walk has warned other dog owners to avoid the area after her beloved pooch was mauled by a jack russell. She says her desperate cries for help were ignored as the owner “just stood there and watched” the attack unfold.

A Lalor woman has spoken of her terror after watching another dog maul her beloved pooch as its owner “just stood there and watched” despite her desperate pleas for help.

Hanna Knowls told Leader she was walking Mrva outside the Barry Rd Tennis Club about 5.15pm on Monday when a Jack Russel bounded over from Edgars Rd and lunged at her pomeranian chihuahua.

“Mrva was half the size of this other dog and I was trying to pick Mrva up but he had been bitten and was trying to bite me in retaliation,” she said.

“We were screaming and yelling at the owner to get the dog but he just stood there and watched.”

Ms Knowls finally wrestled Mrva free of the attack and said she walked away to calm her dog down and assess the wound, but the jack russell followed and attacked again.

“My Dad was on the road scaring the dog while the owner did nothing — we were screaming,” She said.

“I don’t understand how difficult it is to walk your dog on a leash — but how can you do nothing when your dog is hurting another dog.

“If that dog was in a dog park it would be a bloodbath.”

The incident comes after Leader reported a rise in dog attacks across Whittlesea in the past month.

Whittlesea Council has also recorded 21 dog attack reports between March and April, compared to nine incidents at the same time last year.

Eltham Veterinary Practice’s Dr Steve Pryor said“more dogs than normal” were being presented with fight wounds.

Ms Knowls said Mrva was bitten in the left leg area and was struggling to even hop into his 10cm-high bed.

“He has PTSD — he won’t let anyone pick him up,” she said.

“Why should my dog carry an injury because of someone else’s irresponsibility.”

She said the jack russell was white, with some brown spots, and was following an elderly man.

She has reported the incident to Whittlesea Council and urged other dog owners to avoid the area.
