AT least 2000 households will get low-cost solar panels under a $10 million expansion to Darebin Council’s Solar Saver program.
Households are encouraged to register their interest as the council prepares to roll out round two of the popular program.
Darebin Council expands multimillion-dollar solar loans scheme
Participants take an interest-free loan from the council to cover the cost of solar panels and installation, with repayments folded into household rates.
Users can expect to save between $200 and $1000 a year depending on power usage and the choice of system.
Kingsbury woman Mai Pham has reaped the rewards of solar power after signing up to the council program in round one.
“We are really happy with our solar system. We’re saving on our energy bills and it means we don’t need to worry so much,” she said.
“The cost of installing solar means it’s not even a possibility for many low-income families, so this help from the council to cover the initial outlay is such a good idea.”
The council will give priority to people on low incomes in round two of the program but has encouraged all residents to apply.
The $10 million expansion, to be funded through cash reserves, will help further the council’s goal to double solar-power generated in Darebin from 18,000kW to 36,000kW.
