The grandparents of a 20-year-old alleged drug mule have put up $100,000 to keep the “naive” and “impressionable” Melbourne man out of prison.
Keilor Downs traffic worker Jason Doan faced Ararat Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with trafficking methamphetamine after police arrested him in Stawell in the early hours of February 11.
The court heard Mr Doan was allegedly discovered with 19 times the amount of methylamphetamine considered a large commercial quantity when police pulled him over on the Western Freeway about 2.30am.
Police told the court the amount indicated Mr Doan’s “involvement with a large criminal enterprise”.
Mr Doan’s grandparents confirmed they would put $100,000 on the line to vouch for their grandson should he be granted bail.
The court heard prosecutors were concerned Mr Doan might flee the country given his recent travel to Vietnam, or depart Victoria.
The accused drug “transporter” was granted bail on the condition he surrender his passport and abide by a curfew from 9pm to 5am.
He will return to court on June 25.
