Darebin Council starts designs for John Cain Memorial Park upgrade

The next stage of the long-awaited Thornbury multi-sports stadium is underway thanks to a $1.4 million cash splash. And while it’s the stadium of the future, there will still be a historical local connection.

Parkside Netball Club will be one of the clubs to benefit from the new stadium.

Designs for the long-awaited Thornbury multi-sports stadium are under way and locals can sleep easy knowing their neighbours are in charge of the process.

The $1.4 million contract was awarded to East Melbourne firm Brand Architects, who will prepare the engineering and architectural drawings expected to take 10 months.

Brand Architects director Laurence Robinson, who lives in Northcote, said they had a crew of Darebin locals on staff who can’t wait to see the stadium built.

“For a long time (Darebin) has been under-resourced in terms of stadiums and I think it’s a fantastic project in a great location,” he said.

The Leader has backed the stadium, which will benefit 5000 women and girls, as part of our Let Them Play campaign.

Mr Robinson said the firm had a long history of projects in the area, having designed the Darebin Community Sports Stadium around 25 years ago.

Brand Architects have recently completed similar stadium projects in Caroline Springs and Altona, where they added additional high ball courts, change rooms and social facilities.

After the designs are complete, a separate contract will be tendered for construction.

This is expected to be in February next year, with construction complete by August 2021.

Darebin councillor Trent McCarthy said it had been a rigorous tender process but he was happy.

Cr McCarthy said the stadium work would provide more than 101 jobs in construction, design and material supply.

The council has allocated almost $6 million in the 2018/19 budget for the design of the facility, carpark and entry, and construction of outdoor courts.
