Coronavirus breach excuses: Northern suburbs COVID law breakers

Going to get drinks, chilling and hanging out with mates and a pizza run — the State 4 lockdown breach excuses that left police shaking their heads and handing out fines.

There have been some interesting — and very expensive — excuses offered up to police in the northern suburbs for breaking COVID regulations.

Whether it was driving to get a pizza because the store didn’t deliver, shopping for clothes 25km from home or looking for a bottle shop, police have heard just about every excuse there is.

Here are some of the best.

JUST CHILLING

Police found four men in a parked car in Flemington between during the curfew hours of 8pm and 5am. When they were asked what they were doing out and in the car when they weren’t meant to be they told officers they were “just chilling”.

THIRST FOR A FINE

When police saw a man and woman heading towards the shops in Meadow Heights during curfew hours they were left scratching their heads. When the duo were approached and asked what they were doing outside during curfew they told officers they were out to get a drink from the shops. Unfortunately it was an expensive drink and both were issued with fines.

POKEMON NO

A Pokemon Go fanatic from Sunshine got a bit too carried away trying to catch ‘em all and was discovered by police in Melbourne’s CBD. Unfortunately his virtual Pokemon couldn’t fight his battle for him and he was fined by officers for being too far from home.

JUST HANGING OUT

In almost identical circumstances to the incident in Flemington, four men were seen by police inside a car in Campbellfield. Upon inspection police found out all four were from different addresses and they claimed to be just “hanging out”. All four men were issued with fines.

PICKING UP A PIZZA

When a pizza shop wouldn’t deliver a man and woman decided to take things into their own hands at 9.30pm. Unfortunately for them police caught them going from Fawkner to Dallas to pick up their food outside curfew hours.

CLOTHES SHOPPING

When you discover your favourite clothing label you don’t go back. Unfortunately that shouldn’t be the case during Stage 4 lockdown, as a Mernda man found out when he was caught shopping in Airport West. After travelling about 25km from his house, he was issued with a fine.

DRIVE YOU TO DRINK

Strikes on two counts for a Sydenham man who was caught trying to buy alcohol in Broadmeadows. Not only was he about 14km from his house, but it was during curfew and he was issued with a fine.

FAST FOOD, FAST FINE

Fast food has been a massive attraction to people all over Victoria during lockdown, but unfortunately for three men it turned out to be an expensive meal. The trio, who were in the same car, were intercepted by police in Roxburgh Park after curfew on their way back home after buying their fast food.

STAY HOME

Staying in your primary place of residence was a measure put in place early by the State Government, but that didn’t stop people try and flout that rule. A Keilor man was intercepted by police in the Surf Coast and told them he had travelled to his holiday house to stay there.

SURFING A FINE

A Strathmore resident who went to catch a few waves on the Surf Coast ended up riding the wave of the law when police caught them away from their primary place of residence.
