A sex offender convicted of sleeping with two underage girls before taking one of them hostage for a night of sex has faced court again, this time for allegedly bashing his new girlfriend.
The Charlton man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, fronted the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday via video link on charges including unlawful assault, wilful damage and breaching an intervention order.
Senior Constable Kaela Cook told the court the man allegedly bashed his girlfriend and smashed her phone after they spoke about their relationship problems on March 3.
The man allegedly grabbed the woman by the throat, kicked and hit her and threw her phone over the balcony at the Hume address they were staying in, she told the court.
He was later arrested on June 5, allegedly in the company of another woman who had an intervention order against him, Sen-Constable Cook told the court.
Magistrate Timothy Hoare said the man’s most recent alleged offending breached two community corrections orders, including one for brutally bashing another female acquaintance.
He also had priors for sexual penetration of a child aged under 16, Mr Hoare said, referring to convictions the man received in 2008 after he had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl|.
As reported by the media at the time, he later took the youngest girl hostage for a night of sex in his caravan and threatened to kill both girls after the older one broke up with him.
He was added to the sex offenders’ register and sentenced to six years’ jail.
The man’s lawyer asked the court on Wednesday for a sentencing indication should her client choose to plead guilty to the present charges.
But Mr Hoare refused, telling her more information was needed from the victims about the impact of the man’s alleged offending against them.
“Given the seriousness of the offending and he seriousness of his prior convictions I don’t think I can go any further,” Mr Hoare said.
The matter was adjourned for a special mention on July 27 and the man was remanded until that date.
