Aldi slammed by shoppers for selling boxes of face masks for $70

Shoppers have slammed a supermarket giant for cashing in on the coronavirus pandemic by selling 50-packs of face masks for almost $70 — more than twice the price customers say they have paid elsewhere — as anger grows over having to wear them.

Aldi has been slammed by shoppers who have accused the supermarket giant of cashing in on the coronavirus pandemic over the sale of face masks.

The Leader visited The Glen’s Aldi store on Sunday and saw 50 packs of face masks being sold for $69.99.

Several customers have taken to social media, saying the company was “profiteering to the max”.

One customer wrote on Aldi’s Facebook page: “Shame on you Aldi, yesterday we bought a 50 pack of face masks in lockdown Melbourne area for $30.”

“Today same store has the price at $70, our neighbour tells us as they went to buy the same pack. Disgrace Aldi,”

Another customer wrote: “Aldi Australia you are ripping people. Nearly $70 bucks for a box of non-medical approved face masks made in China. You’re joking.”

It comes after growing debate within the Casey and Cardinia communities over whether or not people should be wearing face masks.

One Cardinia resident wrote on Facebook: “Being it has been proven that the virus is smaller than the masks can block, what is the point.”

Another said: “Wearing a mask for long periods can cause lots of health issues worse than covid.”

While a Casey resident wrote: “Respiratory masks can prevent up to 97 per cent of droplets which cause infections. It’s about reducing the risk.”

An Aldi spokeswoman said all face masks will be available for sale at $29.99 for a pack of 50 on Tuesday.

“This price is less than what we paid to procure the masks, however we feel strongly that making the masks available to as many Victorians as we can is our responsibility,” the spokeswoman said.

“We are a retailer that prides itself on low prices for quality products and would never use the pandemic as an opportunity to increase our prices. We are completely committed to providing our customers with the lowest prices, every day,” she said.
