RECORD numbers of moggies are arriving at the Cat Protection Society as charity workers desperately wait for new bigger digs to be built.
Cat Protection Society chief executive Ian Crook said they now take in about 1000 felines a year from around Banyule and Nillumbik.
“We’re a small organisation and we wouldn’t have the capacity to sustain our work without a new building,” he said.
The new facility will contain a vet clinic and spacious animal shelter, along with rooms to educate the public on responsible pet ownership.
“We want to make the environment as comfortable as possible for animals and adopters,” Mr Crook said.
He said the organisation will need more volunteers once it moves out of their current portable rooms.
“We’ll be looking for volunteers as well as donations of blankets, food, towels and money,” he said.
Mr Crook said the number of cats they take in could be reduced if more pet owners microchipped and desexed their animals.
“In an ideal world, we would go out of business because there wouldn’t be any strays,” he said.
The Cat Protection Society has existed for 70 years and is building the new facility at its current location in Greensborough.
