A Kings Park mum who blackmailed her friend over a dispute about $50, threatening to set her ex con boyfriend and his mates on the woman, has avoided jail.

Caroline Cassar, 41, was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order and fined $400 at the County Court on Monday, December 7, having pleaded guilty to blackmail and multiple breaches of bail.

Cassar went on the warpath after she loaned her ex-mate $50 for petrol but never got it back, then got her steam up after the woman finished babysitting duties a few minutes earlier than agreed, the court heard.

Their friendship ended in October 2018 after Cassar made heated demands for her cash.

The former mate, who understood the $50 was payment for babysitting, lost her phone for three days but discovered 20 missed calls and a “substantial number” of text messages from Cassar when she got it back.

Cassar begged for the money back because she needed to help pay her boyfriend Joe Madafferi’s barrister fees, according to a message she sent.

The woman changed her mobile number and blocked her nemesis on Facebook.

Cassar then barraged her former friend’s boyfriend with threatening messages from November 6, 2018.

“Tell your Mrs to pay the $300 that she owes or there is going to be trouble,” Cassar texted.

“We know where she lives and if she wants to mess with a Madafferi then go ahead she wont get far.

“I have had enough of these games so if she doesn’t pay me in full tomorrow other people will be coming to collect and trust me they will collect.

“Rocky (Madafferi) and his mates are coming to collet (sic) also they know who u work for so if u wanna keep f***ing me around like this u will know about it.”

On November 10, Cassar sent her friend a Facebook message which said her boyfriend was getting out of jail.

“So god help u if u haven’t paid me by then cause u know he is dying to get at u for calling the police on him and this would be the perfect opportunity for him to come to your house and make a scene and I’m telling u now he will come if I told him to go there,” Cassar wrote.

Cassar also threatened to go to her children’s school and their home and kept up the threats in a later email.

“You have no idea the people I know and they will go to any length to get me what is owed and the longer u take the more the bill increases,” Cassar wrote.

“I mean all the money u owe me $300 by today then my friends will be paying you a visit whether tonight or tomorrow when y r on your own!! Ok.”

The woman reported Cassar to police who arrested her on December 11.

Cassar claimed she just wanted to scare her to get her money back.

The court heard Cassar was on a community correction order at the time.

Cassar was handed another two-year order in June 2019 for dealing meth.

She was charged with three counts of meth possession in March this year and is awaiting sentence.

Judge Fiona Todd noted the “very significant” benefit of Cassar’s co-operation with police, straight up admitting to sending the messages.

Judge Todd said community protection would best be achieved by rehabilitating Cassar.
