A Victorian builder has been fined $15,000 for “harmful” work while constructing homes across Melbourne.

Mutlu Alan was penalised by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) for domestic building work done in Preston, Thornbury, Moonee Ponds, Braybrook and Broadford.

Mr Alan was given written direction to fix works at the Preston, Thornbury and Braybrook sites, but failed to comply.

According to the VBA, Mr Alan left an “assortment of issues” at the building sites, breaching construction codes in multiple ways.

The VBA’s regulatory operations executive director, David Brockman, said while Mr Alan’s numerous errors resulted in the builder receiving a costly fine, consumers copped the “real” cost when practitioners fail to follow the rules.

“Practitioners need to follow the correct processes and act promptly when ordered to fix issues,” he said.

“We expect builders to know the proper processes and adhere to them. Failure to do this will result in a costly penalty.”

Mr Brockman said the VBA worked to ensure practitioners understood how to do things correctly, and discourage risky, harmful or illegal behaviour.

“We expect industry to comply with rules which are in place to ensure that the buildings we live and work in are safe and of good quality.”

Leader attempted to contact Mr Alan for comment.
