Thousands of Shepparton homes inundated

Heartbreaking images of a town submerged have been released.

Residents in the northern Victorian town of Rochester have begun the big clean up after floodwaters inundated homes and businesses.

The entire town was ordered to evacuate last week as flood levels rose, and one person was found dead in his backyard.

Seymour was hit by major floods late last week, with much of the town evacuated.

Benalla and Seymour residents spent the weekend waiting for waters to reside after they copped the brunt of the floods on Friday, with more than 300 homes impacted in Seymour.

Major roads leading out of the area including the Goulburn Valley Highway at Seymour, and the Midland Highway between Benalla and Shepparton were closed off. In Wangaratta, the town’s Apex Park and Painters Island Caravan Park were inundated by floodwaters from the nearby Ovens River.

The river peaked at 12.8m and was expected to stay at high levels for a number of days.

Authorities have built a massive levy in Echuca to prepare for potentially catastrophic floods.

Much of the region is already underwater, but it’s expected the Murray River will peak late Friday or early Saturday.

It comes as armies of volunteers and emergency services continue to pack and stack tens of thousands of sandbags a day to protect homes, businesses and infrastructure.

A community meeting was this week told the Murray River peak would coincide with more heavy rain forecast from later this week.

Between 40mm and 60mm of rain is expected to drench Echuca between Friday and Sunday.

While the Goulburn River did not hit its predicted peak of 12.2m, thousands of homes have still been inundated with water.

About 4000 homes in Shepparton have been impacted by the 2022 Victorian floods.

Evacuated Shepparton, Mooroopna and Kialla locals face the prospect of being unable to return to their homes for days — or even weeks — as the floodwaters slowly subside.

Meanwhile in Maribyrnong, images show the damage left behind after the floodwaters receded.

The aerial imagery is from Australian location intelligence company Nearmap.

The company provides government organisations, architectural, construction and engineering firms, and other companies, with easy, instant access to high resolution aerial imagery, city-scale 3D content, artificial intelligence data sets, and geospatial tools to assist with urban planning, monitoring and development projects in Australia, New Zealand, and North America.
