A cleaner left bloodied and bruised after being hit with an umbrella during an alleged mugging wants the duo off the streets before they hurt anyone else.
Victim Chris, 62, was walking to work along Edward St in Brunswick when he was approached from behind by two men about 4am on August 13.
Senior Constable Ally Forrester said one of the men allegedly involved in the attack threatened Chris with a hammer and demanded money from him, before taking his umbrella and hitting him over the head and body with it, causing bruising, cuts and scratches to his face and body.
She said the men then allegedly searched Chris’ pockets and bag before taking his watch from his wrist and money from his wallet.
“Their actions were quite poor; the victim was just going about his day, he was on his way to work and no one should ever be subjected to the behaviour he was subjected to,” she said.
Speaking to the media today Chris said the attack was “terrifying”.
“I was feeling very shaken, very scared.
“There wasn’t anybody around at that time of the morning so I went to work and waited for my boss (before reporting it to police.)”
Chris said the duo only stole about $30 and also took his gold watch which he bought several years ago for $300.
He said he felt sorry for his alleged attackers, not angry.
“I feel sorry they do this,” he said.
“Maybe they do this to somebody else tomorrow.
“I want them caught and I want justice.”
He is now catching a taxi to work instead of walking because he fears being attacked again.
Fawkner Embona detectives are investigating the incident and released CCTV in hope someone might be able to identify the two men police want to speak with.
They are perceived to be Aboriginal in appearance and aged between 20 to 30 years old.
The first man had a bum bag around his neck, wearing a T-shirt and track pants and a light-coloured baseball cap.
The second man was unshaven with dark wavy hair and was wearing a jacket, pants and slide type footwear.
