Sunbury’s population will balloon by up to 55,000 people under plans approved by the State Government.
As reported exclusively by the Leader when the plans were introduced in 2016, new communities will be centred on 2800ha around Sunbury South and Lancefield Rd in coming decades.
The long-touted precinct structure plans were formally approved in late December. The scheme will guide Sunbury’s development for the next 30 years.

Sunbury state MP Josh Bull said the approvals would create more than 6000 jobs.
The plans include 19,000 homes, a southern link road, two future train stations, two new bridge crossings of Jacksons Creek and three grade-separated road crossings of the rail line.
“They are long-term plans that set our course for the next 20 to 30 years,” Mr Bull said.

Developments include a regional park, conservation network on the Jackons Creek corridor and four town centres.
Sunbury-based Hume councillor Jack Medcraft said approvals were a “long time overdue”.
“It’s a pretty good package. There are going to be people who aren’t happy, but urban sprawl is spreading out,” he said.
“The bigger the population, the more clout you have.”
Cr Medcraft said growth should also mean an increase in medical facilities.
“The thing we don’t have is a hospital,” he said.
“It’s a bit short sighted. Hopefully we’ll have 24-hour medical facilities.”
Resident William Terry said he wanted to see infrastructure match growth forecasts.
“I am a supporter of a big Sunbury as long as infrastructure comes too,” he wrote on Facebook.
Hume Council CEO Dominic Isola said the council was committed to ensuring future growth was supported by the timely provision of infrastructure and services.
