The niece of Melbourne drug kingpin Tony Mokbel has escaped a conviction for speeding.
Jade Mokbel had her driver’s licence suspended for three months after she pleaded guilty at the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on January 24 to a single speeding charge.
Ms Mokbel – whose father Milad and uncle Tony are both convicted drug traffickers – was nabbed by police doing 106km/h in an 80km/h zone on City Link just before 8pm on December 30, 2018.
Police pulled Ms Mokbel over in a white Land Rover near Brunswick West after she had been driving in the city-bound lane.
The court heard Ms Mokbel made no admissions to police at the time she was pulled over.
Police issued Ms Mokbel an infringement notice, but she elected to have the matter heard at court.
Ms Mokbel said through her lawyer that she believed she was in a 100km/h zone when stopped by police.
Ms Mokbel knew the road well as she had driven on it regularly, the court heard.
Ms Mokbel said she drove back a few hours after she was pinged to check the speed limit signage.
She claimed the signs were marked as 100km/h speed limits.
However, police obtained evidence from City Link which proved the speed limit was 80km/h at the time Ms Mokbel was caught speeding.

Ms Mokbel was spared a conviction by Magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz who accepted she had made an “honest mistake”.
The court heard Ms Mokbel owns The Underground Fitness Club gym at North Melbourne, and her dad was recently diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
Ms Mokbel was given a six-month good behaviour bond.
