Taxi driver Abdurahman Abdi jailed for raping ‘limp’ secondary school teacher in his cab

A sicko Footscray cab driver thought by tilting his camera away he could rape his “limp and unresponsive” 25-year-old schoolteacher passenger and get away with it even after asking his shocked victim if she enjoyed his vile assault.

Taxi driver Abdurahman Abi was jailed for raping a 25-year-old schoolteacher.

A taxi driver was caught on camera raping his drunk passenger as she fell in and out of consciousness, a court has heard.

Abdurahman Abdi, 34, was sentenced in the County Court to a minimum three years’ and 10 months’ jail after pleading guilty to a rolled-up charge of rape.

Abdi, from Footscray, tilted his taxi’s CCTV camera downwards before he reached over and assaulted the 25-year-old woman.

The victim, a secondary school teacher, was limp and unresponsive in his front passenger seat.

But the camera still caught his actions — capturing footage of them from the neck down.

Abdi kept molesting the woman after she woke up and whimpered, only pausing when a car drove past.

The court heard she was frozen in shock and didn’t respond when he asked her if she liked it.

He then tried to push the camera further down before he exposed himself and put her hand on his genitalia.

She pulled her hand away and he went back to touching her while she sat limp.

Abdi then used a water bottle to wash his hands and drove her home.

He’d picked her up from a Footscray street in mid-2019.

The schoolteacher, who’d spent the evening drinking at a bar, had just been kicked out of another taxi, having vomited out its window and been too drunk to tell the driver her address.

The court heard Abdi drove the woman for about a minute before she got out in Barkley St and walked away.

Abdi then spent several minutes searching for her, before he found her behind Footscray Library and waved at her to get back in.

He drove her for five minutes before stopping the taxi so she could vomit out the window.

It was then that Abdi tilted the camera down and pulled her limp body back into her seat.

He took her Eftpos card out of her hand and took payment from her before beginning the assault.

The court heard the woman was believed to have an estimated blood alcohol level of between 0.162 and 0.269 at the time.

She was left traumatised by the attack, suffering flashbacks.

Judge Sarah Dawes said Abdi “grossly abused” his position and the trust placed in him as taxi driver.

The court heard the former St Albans Secondary College student had been driving Ubers and taxis for 10 years.

It was submitted he was working 14 hours, six days a week and was stressed about financially supporting his wife and three young children

The court heard he was born in Africa and was homeless from age 16-21 after moving to Australia.

Judge Dawson said Abdi, who had indicated he planned to study upon his release, had “sound prospects” of rehabilitation.

She sentenced him to a maximum of six years’ jail, noting he had already served 488 days.
