A man who allegedly rammed a car during a road rage incident before chasing a driver with a hammer and screaming “he raped my sister” was bailed this week.

Hasan Gunes was granted bail in Werribee Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after he was charged following a high-speed collision on the Western Freeway near Ravenhall last month.

It was alleged the incident happened while Mr Gunes was on bail in connection to a 2021 shootout outside a home in Melbourne’s northwest.

In the earlier incident, police allege Mr Gunes drove with associates to a Greenvale property in Melbourne’s north shortly after a brawl at nightclub Love Machine before seven rounds were fired at the house.

Police allege the 32-year-old was the driver of a Holden Commodore that rammed a Toyota Corolla at about 90km/h, causing significant damage, before getting out and screaming “he raped my sister” on July 7.

Court documents, seen by Leader News, allege the pursuit started on Christies Rd, Ravenhall before escalating on the Western Freeway.

Mr Gunes allegedly drove at a fast speed to catch the other man, tailgating and veering “wildly” across multiple lanes of traffic.

After it was rammed, the Corolla spun out of control in heavy traffic and stopped facing the opposite direction before Mr Gunes allegedly crashed his own vehicle into a guardrail.

He then allegedly chased the driver on foot through halted traffic into grassland near a Caroline Springs industrial area.

Police prosecutors told the court the other driver was expected to be charged with “similar offences”.

The matter was heard in Sunshine Magistrates' Court but was adjourned to Werribee later in the week.

The court heard police located Mr Gunes’ marine licence inside the white Commodore following the collision before arresting him at a Balwyn North address on July 19.

During a search of the property, police located a number of clothing items believed to be worn by Mr Gunes during the alleged road rage incident.

Mr Gunes asked Magistrate Cynthia Lynch to be released so he could attend his sister’s wedding in Turkey which has been brought forward because their father was terminally ill.

Defence lawyer Phillip Dunn said Mr Gunes should be granted bail after questioning significant elements of the prosecution’s evidence.

The court heard that Mr Gunes’ suffered serious head injuries and minor brain damage following a multiple car pileup in 2014 where he broke multiple bones and lost part of his eye.

Mr Dunn said every step was taken by his family so he did not drive and he remains on light duties in the family’s construction business.

Mr Gunes‘ brother appeared in court and said the family would provide $100,000 assurance that he would comply with his bail conditions, if granted.

Mr Gunes’ defence said witness testimony would reveal he was not the driver.

After adjourning the matter for two days to consider “a number of factors”, Magistrate Cynthia Lynch granted him bail.

The matter was adjourned to November 13.
