SUNBURY will get a multi-level carpark next to its train station in a surprise announcement this morning.

The Labor-promised extra 300 car spaces will be built on the site of the current carpark — near Woolworths, Reading Cinemas and Big W — with the existing deck extended and an additional level added.

Sunbury state Labor MP Josh Bull made the announcement — exclusive to the Leader — and said planning would now start.

The new carpark will also provide accessible spaces for people with a disability, secure storage facilities for cyclists and better access for pedestrians.

The upgrade is part of the State Government’s $60 million plan to put 200 new car parks at metropolitan stations.

Mr Bull said he knew from experience that “it’s often a struggle to find a park at Sunbury station — which is why we’re creating more than 300 new carparking spaces”.

“These extra spaces will reduce congestion on our local roads and allow more people to catch the train and get where they need to go,” he said.

“There is still more work to be done, but this is the first step in expanding car parking at Sunbury station to ensure we meet the future needs of both commuters and shoppers”.

Sunbury commuter Andrew Gould told the Leader the current parking situation forced commuters to get to the Sunbury town centre by 6.45am.

“If you miss the window, which is 6.45am on the Woolworths side and maybe 6.55am on the other side, you have to park streets away and walk back,” he said.

“When you don’t get a park, you are getting a later train and getting to work later.”

Mr Bull said with the parking situation easing for commuters in the near future, the emphasis shifted to the challenges for commuters.

“I’d love to see Hume Council lead the charge and work with private enterprise to start finding some new parking opportunities,” he said.

The current deck of the Sunbury station carpark is usually full by 7.30am. The deck will be extended and another level added.

Planning on the new complex will continue into next year along with consultation with the community and stakeholders. Construction is expected to start in 2019.

The Leader reported last month the state Liberal party has a $1 million plan for extra carparking — a multistorey complex on the Harris Scarfe land at the corner of Macedon and Evans St. That project is contingent on the Liberals winning government, which could lead to the creation of a new Sunbury Council.
