Sunbury carparking: CBD set for more options as Labor, Liberal jostle over issue

THE Sunbury MP has a plan for 300 car parks in town but no details as to where. Now his opponent in the November election has a plan, but it will depend on her party winning power, a wrangle over securing the land and a new Sunbury Council.

THE carparking crush in Sunbury is set to ease regardless of who wins November’s state election.

The Liberal Party last week vowed to build a multi-level carpark in the centre of Sunbury under a $1 million election pledge.

The ALP announced in April it would also add more parking.

The Liberal commitment, made by Opposition roads spokesman David Hodgett and Liberal candidate for Sunbury Cassandra Marr, would see a carpark rise on land adjacent to Harris Scarfe on the corner of Evans and Station streets.

Mr Hodgett said traders, shoppers and commuters were frustrated by a dearth of carparking in Sunbury.

“In Sunbury, we are seeing people take a risk in parking in two-hour spots and then frustrating businesses who want those spots rotated,” he said.

“Sunbury businesses have been screaming from the rooftops about parking in Sunbury — it’s become so evident this issue is vital.”

Sunbury Residents Association president Peter Free and Sunbury Business Association vice-president Marnie Harding have supported the project.

Labor has pledged to build 300 carparking spots, but a site and cost are yet to be confirmed.

Ms Harding said she was relieved both parties now have a plan for the area. “It’s good to know they are both committed, but with precinct structure plans set to bring in new centres around Sunbury, there really needs to be a holistic plan for all of Sunbury’s centre,” she said.

Sunbury state Labor MP Josh Bull said the Liberal proposal was flawed.

“They have not spoken to land owners, the City of Hume and cannot explain how this proposal would work,” he said.

A multi-level carpark at the Harris Scarfe site had been proposed before but fell over after disagreements among landholders.
