Daniel Shaw has gone from the streets of Sunbury to the national stage.

The 20-year-old busker wowed crowds and judges alike with his audition for the popular talent show The Voice Australia last week.

He covered Labrinth’s Beneath Your Beautifulon piano, with coaches Guy Sebastian, Delta Goodrem and Boy George turning their chairs to indicate interest in his talent before the song’s chorus. Kelly Rowland soon followed suit.

The 20-year-old was given the chance to showcase an original song, Don’t Leave Me Now, after a terse exchange with Boy George had the coach storm off stage.

“Performing the original was amazing. Being able to perform an original on a platform like that, it was something I could only really dream of,” Shaw told Sunbury Leader.

“You want to be known as your own artist.”

Before his appearance on the hit TV show, Shaw was already well-known to many people across Sunbury.

“A lot of people just know me as the busker,” he said.

“My phone pretty much blew up (after the first performance) with messages from a whole bunch of friends and family.

“It’s amazing how many people I know in Sunbury.” Shaw’s love of music began at a young age with his father’s encouragement.

“My dad started me on the piano when I was six. When I was eight years old, I started to listen to Elton John and Billy Joel,” he said.

“My dad saw something in me and decided we were going to start busking.”

Sunbury Leader first interviewed Shaw when he released his debut single at age 12, written by his mum, Lina.

“It got me passionate about music in the sense it started becoming a dream for me,” he said.

“(My mum) helped create the foundation.”

Shaw has spent the years since developing his own unique style and lyrics.

He said he was often compared to artists like Ed Sheeran and James Blunt.

“It’s definitely pop-ballad material, something that’s intimate and meets people where they’re at. I want to influence people with music,” he said.

“I like to think I have my own kind of style.”

He said The Voice Australia was a great stepping stone.

“The goal is to go global and to keep creating my own music and hopefully chart around the world,” he said.
