New design concepts have breathed life into an otherwise tired and dingy retain station.
The Broadmeadows train station, which opened in 1990, has not seen any major refurbishments in three decades.
Now, a group of Swinburne University architecture students have put forward their own designs to revolutionise the suburban station.
It was ranked as one of Melbourne’s top 10 train stations for crime, with more than 90 offences recorded on site within a year.
The Leader and Hume Council are calling for $80 million to rebuild the station as part of our Fix The Station campaign.
Designs propose an elevated railway to open up the ground beneath the track, multi-level carparking as well as space for retail stores and offices.
Mayor Carly Moore said the designs gave the area a sense of functionality and creativity.
“The local community deserves better than the ad hoc investment and works we have seen
in recent years,” Cr Moore said.
“Their ideas transform a dark, confusing and uninviting transport interchange into a bright and welcoming place that has the potential to reinvigorate the surrounding area.”
Swinburne architecture student Maria Sanjna envisioned the train station as a transport hub for Melbourne’s north.
“Being so close to Melbourne Airport it was important to consider that business people and tourists would be coming into the area,” she said.
“The station precinct design needed to eliminate any barriers and focus on the importance of public transportation and pedestrian access.”

BROADY ‘DESERVES BETTER’ THAN ‘DINGY’ STATION
Broadmeadows state Labor MP Frank McGuire refused to answer questions about what actions he was taking to lobby for the train station upgrade.
He said work to deliver $1 million of improvements, including new street lighting along the walkway between subway entrance and the station, signage and passenger information displays would begin soon.
“These improvements will make it easier and safer for people to get to where they need to go,” he said.
